Articulating Digital with Purpose

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) lay out the most important challenges we need to address for the sake of both people and planet by 2030. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide part of the answer to these challenges if they are responsibly developed with a shared positive impact in mind: digital with purpose.

The Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) provides a platform for communicating and coordinating the efforts of this more informed and purposeful development and deployment, using the SDGs as a central framework for action.

Problem

While the opportunity, both for the ICT sector and the sectors and organisations at the forefront of deployment, is enormous, so are the challenges in articulating a unified, accessible yet thorough report of the problems we face, and the ways forward in monitoring, analysing and optimising that ICT can offer.

While the opportunity, both for the ICT sector and the sectors and organisations at the forefront of deployment, is enormous, so are the challenges in articulating a unified, accessible yet thorough report of the problems we face, and the ways forward in monitoring, analysing and optimising that ICT can offer.

Solution

Working with Deloitte and GeSI, we created a report which explores the relationship between digital with a purpose and the achievement of the SDGs.

We used a modular, multi-layered information structure of key messages, summaries and infographics for the scanning reader, that drilled down to relevant specifics for interested specialists. All the while, the report adheres to the core narrative and backbone framework of the 17 SDGs. Case studies of illustrative projects by global industry leaders like AT&T and Deutsche Telekom are presented in the same visually generous, nuanced yet accessible way. Finally, the report was transposed into an engaging four-minute overview film and mobile-friendly website, expanding its footprint while keeping its consistent, intuitive visual shorthand.

A 500 page report, video, interactive PDF and web site were produced for the launch held over 2 events during UNGA 2019 in New York. The process was intense, with the report being released iteratively over 6 weeks. This required high levels of flexibility, good communication and exemplary core skills. Despite this the working relationship was good, the quality outstanding and I will look for every opportunity to work with them again.
