Communicating the potential of technology

Technology has the power to solve some of humanity’s biggest problems and drive positive change in the world. 

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the most important challenges facing both people and the planet. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are part of the answer to these challenges if they are developed responsibly.

The Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) facilitates positive, purposeful development in the ICT industry, using the SDGs as a framework for action.

Working with Deloitte and GeSI, we created a report exploring the relationship between purposeful use of digital technology and the achievement of the SDGs.

Problem

The opportunity is enormous for the ICT sector, as well as the organisations at the forefront of its deployment. But the challenges also loom large. The report needed to be unified and accessible in its messaging, as well as being thorough and acknowledging the problems faced by the industry. As well as articulating these issues, it also needed to offer a way forward and clearly demonstrate what ICT can offer.

We designed the report with clarity and readability in mind, using a modular structure to highlight key messages and provide skimmable summaries and infographics. Careful design allowed us to present layers of information, with high-level messages being easily apparent while still providing relevant specifics for interested specialists.

The report follows the 17 SDGs, using them as a central narrative to structure the information. Case studies of illustrative projects by global industry leaders like AT&T and Deutsche Telekom add nuance and demonstrate key ideas in an accessible way. Finally, we created an engaging four-minute overview film and mobile-friendly website, expanding the report’s reach while keeping its consistent, intuitive design throughout.
