From massive data to massive impact

Global reports on a data-rich industry

Mobile technology has boosted global productivity and supported millions of jobs worldwide – and that impact looks set to continue. Over the next seven years, 1.4 billion people will start using mobile internet for the first time. By 2025, internet subscribers will rise to 5 billion – over 60% of the global population.

The GSMA is an industry organisation representing the interests of mobile network operators across the globe. With the GSMA’s worldwide focus, we needed to create an all-encompassing global report, along with a series of more detailed location-specific reports covering Asia Pacific, China, Europe, Latin America, Latina y el Caribe (ES), Middle East and North Africa, North America, Russia and CIS, Sub-Saharan Africa, West Africa and the Pacific Islands.

Problem

The mobile industry produces a lot of data. That means any detailed report on the industry is driven by massive numbers and complex metrics. Each report presented an immense challenge, requiring a large amount of complex information to be collected and distilled into a clear, coherent review of the state of the industry.

All our work is designed for the digital world, but this is especially important for a technical topic.

The subject matter called for cutting-edge design solutions that translated easily to various formats. At the same time, the reports needed to appeal to audiences in various countries, while maintaining a consistent design and style throughout.

Solution

Our team has a deep understanding of the mobile industry, so we were ideally positioned to take on this project. Combined with the unique perspective that comes from not being directly part of the industry, this knowledge and experience allowed us to provide big-picture insights and a clear eye for what parts of the enormous data sets were most important.

We created a visual language that was bold enough to stand out, but simple enough to translate to various contexts. With a central narrative and style across the reports, the end result was a versatile design that worked for all 10 countries, while still clearly being part of the same series.

The working relationship was good, the quality outstanding and I will look for every opportunity to work with them again.
